Better sticking to the real issues for debate. Did you not learn from your guest post thread from the 21 July. You had 48 posts full of debate, discussion and argument. But perhaps you don't want that. Perhaps you just like the spin.
Why wouldn’t it be, Wardog? Stuart Winton did a serious post on it so I thought I’d take a different tack.
But we can abandon the caption contest if nobody’s interested. The substance behind the Sunday Herald piece is that David Kerr’s judgement is being called into question.
I was a little surprised to see the Sunday herald running this non-story, after reading a few lines I thought it was a bit of a piss-take of the last few weeks of negative labour led spin on David Kerr.
Is this really the level of discussion we want in our politics in Scotland, the cut and pasting of Labour Party sensationalist tittle tattle masquerading as news in our national media?
How sad.
For a more balanced coverage, visit Stuart Winton's blog Planet Politics
For more unbalanced drivel vbisit Jenny Hjul, the raging anti-nationalist opinion piece in the Times for a real snapshot of the full nastiness that lies behind much of the unionist press.
It isn’t a non-story. Kerr’s action was sufficiently questionable for BBC managers to fear that “his conduct could have breached health and safety guidelines, as well as resulting in a police incident”.
As I asked you elsewhere, wouldn’t you admit that a rather peculiar picture of David Kerr is now emerging?
I’m referring to his “camp impersonation” in a “high, mincing voice” of John Knox, his Rangers/Knox joke, his allegedly “fundamentalist” and “ultra-conservative” views on social issues, his “dangerously elitist” comments about a Glasgow university, being thought of by BBC colleagues as “arrogant”, and so on.
AM2, I don't think the substance is that David Kerr's judgement is being called into question. The substance is a sensationalist image of a 'gun toting' David Kerr,
Stuart has indeed got a balanced anecdote to the Sunday Herald's rather lame story and puts it in some context of what is becoming quite an extraordinary smear campaign orchestrated by Labour but apparently with the full compliance of the Scottish media.
I'm not sure a captions contest is the right thing but it's not my blog and I'm feeling rather circumspect with the news that the last tommy passed away yesterday, Harry Patch
With deaths in Scotland to airguns and other firearms high and the issue having a real political dimension about it, the Sunday herald's focus appears at best flippant, at worst lazy recess silly story season that many will find disturbing.
I think the serious issue here is that the Sunday Herald is using a picture to mislead potential readers. Without reading the article, the picture and the headline suggests Kerr owns and uses a rifle, in spite of his "posh pinkies".
In fact, not until the seventh sentence of the article, do you really sus that it was to do with a BBC story! I mean, does everyone know that he worked for the BBC until recently?
Now whether this is politically motivated or sensationalism to help increase sales, is questionable.
Will the Sunday Herald file this under "Trivia & Humour"? Me thinks not.
The Sunday Herald story is actually very funny, although I don't think that was the intention. It was the programme's editor who had the serious quyestions to answer, not Mr Kerr as he was only the presenter. And drawing in ''Councillor Kalashnikov'' only made the spurious nature of the story more evident, and risible.
People are just not that stupid to think that the SNP are all gun toting wildmen, especially as you point out SU, Mr Kerr is hardly going to be starring in any of Quentin's new movies. Brad Pitt he ain't.
But on a serious note, cars being driven about Springburn full of guns is not actually that unusual. It would be nice to see the by-election debate move onto the issues which actually affect voters in North Glasgow.
The main aspect of the story which I don’t find in the least funny is that Kerr held up the rifle “as cars drove within yards of him”, which for all he knew could have caused distress or even driver panic. Willie Bain’s characterisation of the incident as evidence of “stunningly bad judgement” is absolutely correct.
SU - he was being filmed ! That's where you got the picture from. I think the cameraman and sound man and whoever else was there might have been a bit of a clue to passers by that he wasn't about to recreate a scene out of ''The Wild Bunch''.
Yes, I had actually realised that it's a screen capture! But his action could still have caused distress - notably for children, or a driver who caught a glimpse of a firearm out of his or her peripheral vision. Unlikely, perhaps, but irresponsible nonetheless.

OK, I'll ease up :~)
'The substance behind the Sunday Herald piece' is that they've got to sell newspapers.
"As I asked you elsewhere, wouldn’t you admit that a rather peculiar picture of David Kerr is now emerging?"
Not really but 'm becoming increasingly concerned about the bigotry and biased nature of our national press and the Scottish Labour Party.
Is it just me or is this smear campaign desperate?
I mean, Labour are defending a 10,000 majority.
What's going on?
"allegedly “fundamentalist” and “ultra-conservative” views on social issues"
Do you know Willy Bain's views on homosexuality, abortion and same sex adoption?
Do you know any other candidates views on these issues?
Why is that?
Wardog: Your rhetorical questions kill actual debate. Hadn’t you noticed?
Hardly “gun toting” by the way. I mean: just look at those posh pinkies! Tarantino, it ain’t!
'MY' rhetorical questions?
Pot Kettle surely. ;-)

On a slightly different note.
Are these 'leaks' from the BBC constituting a breach of the political impartiality code?

Wardog: However the picture may appear to you, the Sunday Herald reported that Kerr was "holding up the rifle as cars drove within yards of him".
Look how he's holding it.
darnéd townies shouldn't be allowed any weaponry!
And that tie is aweful. looks like red security tape.
Drives a ford KA, can't handle rifle, dresses badly and gurns. Is this truely the Best the SNP can offer?!
