£14,000 expense claim for “party political stunt”

The Telegraph and Guardian are reporting that Alex Salmond’s abandoned attempt to impeach Tony Blair for imagined “high crimes and misdemeanours” resulted in a £14,100 legal bill.

Labour MSP Lord Foulkes has asked the Commons Standards Commissioner to investigate related SNP/Plaid Cymru expense claims, calling their action “nothing more than a party political stunt”.

Well, if anyone is an expert in 'political stunts' it's surely the Bold Lord Foulkes

    Is that rhyming slang?

Yawn. Lord George has asked the Commons Standards Commissioner to investigate.

If the Standards Commissioner says it was inappropriate then you have a point. Until then you don't.

Double standards, Indy? Do you take the same purist line over allegations against non-nationalists?

I don't think it is purist to say that any allegations should be investigated by the appropriate authorities. Foulkes has made a lot of allegations against the SNP - none of them have been substantiated, however it was entirely right that they were investigated.

It's undoubtedly a purist line, Indy - and of course such allegations should be investigated.

I don't expect the CSC will uphold this one either, but in a sense that's beside the point. I would agree the failed impeachment was a “party political stunt”. Presumably you wouldn't.
